Personal protection and safety is very important in a world where danger is everywhere and no one is exempt from the possibility of potential harm. This grim reality, although unpleasant to contemplate, means that the individual must be ever vigilante and on guard to assess potential risks. Risk assessment often takes place quickly with a cursory glance or a look in all direction and along possible roots. Such an assessment not only considers distance and time taken, but also a judgement of the people in the immediate area and their potential to inflict physical harm, stir up trouble, be involved in a fight or other dangerous behaviour.

It starts with awareness. Realizing that no single location is one hundred percent safe and secure is the first key to protecting yourself. Look for dark and secluded places and recognize that those areas are potential hiding spots for a would-be attacker or suspicious characters. Not everyone you see outside at night is a "bad" person, but error on the side of caution. An understanding and reasonable person will forgive your seemingly overcautious display, recognize the reasons for it, and applaud your cautiousness. Don't worry about what the rest of the people may think because protecting body and person is your primary concern and it is not what others think. Often people think that they don't have need to worry because they are only going up one or two blocks to the convenience or corner store. However, a problem or difficult situation can occur anywhere.

Personal safety is an issue that must be managed for all regardless of any labels we chose to apply to particular groups. Most people tend to compartmentalize individuals or groups by such things as nationality, skin colour or other distinguishing characteristics. Managing personal safety means having a strategy when the unexpected happens. It also means being able to act and act quickly. Don't give an opponent or adversary even more time to gain an even greater advantage than they already have with the element of surprise. Only the person who plans a personal anti-crime strategy can count on having a safe and secure retirement.

It is an unfortunate reality that we must be prepared to protect ourselves - our own life, property and family. However, this is a fact, and telling yourself otherwise only leaves you unable to deal with an all-to-common eventuality. Crime intrudes in life around us everyday. It is found in the city, the suburbs, and small towns and out in the country. It is everywhere we live. Personal safety is becoming a "hot-button" issue and more of a concern for political leaders in today's world. United States President John Kennedy was shot in Dallas at exactly 12:30 pm on November 22, 1963. Some writers have argued that this assassination was the most significant event in modern American History as it changed the face of politics and political security. This event also underscores the importance of personal security. It was already an issue in the mid twentieth century and even more so in the twenty-first century and beyond.

Personal safety with significant for both sexes, tends to be of greater concern for women because of obvious differences, generally speaking in size and strength. This is an obvious generalization of a none sexist nature. Some women are obviously much bigger and stronger than the average man and vice versa. However it need to be remembered that there are predators out there who are looking for women to stalk, rape, murder, or harass with crank phone calls. These people will target any woman who has a job involving visiting people's homes like real estate agents or insurance salespeople.

It is clear from the preceding that personal safety is a very significant, important and relevant need and concern. What can be done to improve personal safety? There are any things. Here are a few vitally important points to remember:

1. Turn around and face any potential threat and use a strong voice to yell, "No!" or "Get away from me!" in whatever language comes to you first.
2. It is better to yell "Fire!" than it is to yell "Help!" because more people will respond to the threat of a fire.
3. Practice relaxation so you can steady yourself if danger threatens. Panic can disable you. It is useful to learn how to keep control and remain calm in a difficult situation.
4. Call the neighbourhood police department and ask if there have been many muggings or auto break-near a potential property. If so, you may be wise to reconsider relocating there.
5. Communities can take this further by working with residents in the local area to conduct safety audits to identify sources of fear that can be addressed. This could require alterations to the infrastructure and surrounding environment to improve safety reduce fear and increase citizen interaction.
6. Crimes can take place at any time but more often take place at night, and are more often committed by young males.
7. Carrying a personal safety device increases your chances of defeating an attacker and getting away unharmed. Not only do these powerful devices disable an attacker in a variety of ways, but they also psychologically stun him as well.
8. Many people carry whistles on their key rings or in their pockets. Blowing whistles can attract the attention of passers-by, who can then call for help.
9. Carry a stun gun in your glove box to keep yourself and your family safe when you travel.
10. Lock your door immediately upon entering the vehicle. Make this your first action, even before you put the key in the ignition. Also remember to never store any valuables in your car. If you must carry something of significant value, make certain that it is well hidden and out of sight.
11. Do not store the title for your car in the glove compartment.
12. Lock up any tools that may be used for prying or breaking.
13. Ask for photo identification of all repairpersons. If you are suspicious, call to verify employment.
14. Avoid carrying a purse whenever possible. If you carry a purse hold it firmly in front of you.
15. Keep "mugger money" of ten or fifteen dollars in your wallet or purse to satisfy money hungry thieves. Never carry large sums of money or unnecessary credit cards with you.

Doing these important things will help improve personal security and safety. Please remember that this list is not all-inclusive. Make this your motto: Prepare for and expect the unexpected. Look, observe and be aware of what others around you do not see and are oblivious to. Remembering this one preceding sentence alone could save your life. Be aware, sharp and in control as much as possible. It is hoped you have found this article useful. It is extremely important that you take this very seriously. It is an extremely vital topic.
